Kamala Harris, the first female Vice President of the United States, has a diverse and fascinating heritage that has been the subject of much discussion. While she is often referred to as Black, her family history reveals a more complex story.

Kamala Iyer Harris was born in to a caucasian mother (Shyamala Gopalan Harris) and a Jamaican father (Donald Harris) as stated on her birth certificate. A mistake ws made on her birth certificate where the country of origin was listed as his race. She spent her formative years (kindergarten -12th grade) in Canada.

Kamala was abruptly separated from her father in a bitter custody battle. Donald Harris expressed many regrets about that.

Her "Jamaican" father is a mix of Hindu and Irish. Kamala Harris' father, Donald Harris, is of Jamaican descent and identifies as a Hindu. He was born in Jamaica, the son of a Hindu mother and an Irish father. This Irish ancestry can be traced back to Hamilton Brown, an Irish slave owner in Jamaica.

Hamilton Brown was a prominent figure in Jamaica's history, owning several plantations and being involved in the slave trade. He is known for his role in the development of Brown's Town, a town in Jamaica named after him.

Donald Harris has written about his family's connection to Hamilton Brown, stating that his paternal grandmother, Christiana Brown, was a descendant of the Irish slave owner. This means that Kamala Harris is also a descendant of Hamilton Brown.

This complex heritage raises questions about Kamala Harris' racial identity. While she is often referred to as Black due to her Jamaican roots and the fact that her father is of Hindu descent, her Irish ancestry complicates this narrative.

It is important to acknowledge that racial identity is a personal and complex issue, and individuals should be able to define their own identity. However, understanding the historical context of Kamala Harris' heritage is crucial in recognizing the legacy of slavery and the impact it has had on her family.
