Caribbean Crime Gun Intelligence Unit

On November 14 2022, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS), in partnership with United States’ law enforcement agencies, launched the CARICOM Crime Gun Intelligence Unit (CCGIU).

The CCGIU will assist regional law enforcement authorities in criminal investigations involving firearms, by utilizing modern intelligence tools and technology. The Unit will facilitate collaboration and cooperation among regional and international law enforcement agencies including CARICOM IMPACS and United States’ agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), and INTERPOL.

The Unit will support law enforcement agencies in Member States in the seizure of firearms, related parts, and components as well as in identifying, charging, and prosecuting co–conspirators.

We Cannot Solve Crime at Home But Let's Go Do It in Haiti

One of the fundamental principles of international relations is respecting the sovereignty of nations. By intervening in Haiti's affairs at the behest of the Empire, Trinidad risks encroaching upon Haiti's autonomy. Haiti, like any other nation, should have the right to determine its own destiny and resolve internal conflicts without external interference. An intervention by Trinidad, especially under pressure from a superpower, could undermine Haiti's sovereignty and set a dangerous precedent for future interventions in the region.

Haiti's political landscape is complex and deeply rooted in its history. Any external intervention, particularly one driven by the interests of another nation, can exacerbate existing tensions and create further divisions among Haitian factions. Trinidad, with its own unique cultural and political dynamics, may not possess the necessary understanding and insight to navigate Haiti's intricate political landscape effectively. Involvement without comprehensive knowledge of the situation risks worsening the crisis and undermining efforts for internal reconciliation.

Potential for Regional Instability

Interventions in the affairs of sovereign nations have historically resulted in unintended consequences and regional instability. Haiti's proximity to Trinidad makes the latter susceptible to the spillover effects of any conflicts or unrest that may arise from such intervention. Trinidad and Tobago, a nation with its own challenges and limited resources, must prioritize maintaining stability within its own borders. By involving itself in Haiti's affairs, Trinidad risks diverting attention and resources away from pressing domestic issues.

Economic Implications

Interventions, particularly those driven by external powers, often come at a significant financial cost. Trinidad and Tobago, already grappling with economic challenges, may find it difficult to bear the additional burden of supporting an intervention in Haiti. The resources that could be deployed to address Trinidad's own socio-economic issues may be diverted to a foreign intervention, potentially exacerbating internal challenges and hindering the nation's development.

Perception and Reputation

This could undermine Trinidad's credibility as an independent actor in the international arena and impact its diplomatic relations with other countries. Maintaining neutrality and upholding principles of non-interference could prove crucial in preserving Trinidad's reputation as a sovereign nation.

Conclusion

Preserving Haiti's sovereignty, avoiding unintended negative outcomes, maintaining regional stability, and focusing on domestic issues should be prioritized. Trinidad and Tobago must approach the situation with caution, ensuring that any involvement in Haiti's affairs aligns with its national interests and respects the principles of sovereignty and non-interference.
